Description

The Aviator came out of a 1937 US Army Air Corps brief for a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude, and the Large Metal is that teardrop at full size. On a black frame it loses the aviation reference and just reads as a clean pair of sunglasses.

The frame is a glossy black through the wire rims, the double bridge and the temples, finished with black temple tips and clear adjustable nose pads.

The lenses are G-15 green, the classic Ray-Ban tint. Against black metal the green is easy to miss from a distance and obvious up close, which is most of the appeal. They are dark enough to read almost black from the outside and neutral enough to look through that colours hold their proper shape.

About Ray-Ban
Ray-Ban began in 1937 with a commission from the US Army Air Corps: build a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The result became the Aviator, and the Wayfarer followed in 1952, two of the most recognised and most copied designs in eyewear history. Nearly a century on, the icons remain in production largely unchanged while a new generation of designs, from bio-based frames to the sculptural Puffer series, keeps the catalogue moving. Few brands span military kit, film wardrobes and everyday essentials in the same breath.
