Description

Ray-Ban drew the Aviator in 1937 to a US Army Air Corps brief for a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The Large Metal is that teardrop at full size, and this is the version that leans hardest on contrast.

The frame is polished gold through the wire rims, the double bridge and the temples, with pale clear temple tips and clear adjustable nose pads rather than the usual black.

The lenses are a solid polarised black, opaque from the outside with no gradient. The polarising filter cuts reflected glare off water, wet road and glass, which is where a dark lens on its own struggles. Three widths are available, so the same colourway comes in 55mm, 58mm and 62mm.

About Ray-Ban
Ray-Ban began in 1937 with a commission from the US Army Air Corps: build a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The result became the Aviator, and the Wayfarer followed in 1952, two of the most recognised and most copied designs in eyewear history. Nearly a century on, the icons remain in production largely unchanged while a new generation of designs, from bio-based frames to the sculptural Puffer series, keeps the catalogue moving. Few brands span military kit, film wardrobes and everyday essentials in the same breath.
