Description

Ray-Ban built the Aviator in 1937 to a US Army Air Corps brief for a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The Large Metal holds that teardrop at full size.

The frame is arista gold, bright and warm through the wire rims, the double bridge and the temples. The detail worth knowing about is at the ends: the temple tips are blue, layered with a teal stripe that runs forward along the arm, so there is a bit of colour where most Aviators put plain black.

The lenses are a flat slate blue, even top to bottom with no gradient and no mirror, picking up the tips rather than fighting them. Available in the 58mm and the wider 62mm.

About Ray-Ban
Ray-Ban began in 1937 with a commission from the US Army Air Corps: build a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The result became the Aviator, and the Wayfarer followed in 1952, two of the most recognised and most copied designs in eyewear history. Nearly a century on, the icons remain in production largely unchanged while a new generation of designs, from bio-based frames to the sculptural Puffer series, keeps the catalogue moving. Few brands span military kit, film wardrobes and everyday essentials in the same breath.
