Description

The Large Metal is the Aviator at full size, the shape Ray-Ban built in 1937 to a US Army Air Corps brief for a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude.

The frame is arista, Ray-Ban's bright warm yellow gold, running through the wire rims, the double bridge and the temples. Clear adjustable nose pads and pale temple tips keep it light against the metal.

The lens is where this one differs from the usual green or grey. It is a flat slate blue, even from top to bottom with no gradient and no mirror, dusty rather than bright, so it reads as a colour choice up close and still sits quietly from a distance. Three widths are available.

About Ray-Ban
Ray-Ban began in 1937 with a commission from the US Army Air Corps: build a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. The result became the Aviator, and the Wayfarer followed in 1952, two of the most recognised and most copied designs in eyewear history. Nearly a century on, the icons remain in production largely unchanged while a new generation of designs, from bio-based frames to the sculptural Puffer series, keeps the catalogue moving. Few brands span military kit, film wardrobes and everyday essentials in the same breath.
