Daniel Johnston was never trying to be cool. The Austin-based artist and musician spent decades making lo-fi recordings on borrowed tape decks and filling notebooks with felt-tip characters that felt too sincere for the art world to know what to do with. His drawings, the wide-eyed frogs, the nervous creatures, the wobbly hand-lettered slogans, became cultural shorthand for something honest in a landscape that usually rewards polish. When he passed in 2019, what he left behind was a body of work that keeps finding new audiences because it never tried to find one in the first place.
Butter Goods, the Perth-founded skate label, has built their own reputation on a similar instinct. Their collaborations tend to reach for artists and references that feel personal rather than strategic. This collection with the Daniel Johnston estate is one of their most considered to date, translating Johnston's hand-drawn characters across a full range of apparel and homeware.
The Collection
The standout piece is the Dragon Knit Zip-Thru Sweater in Black / Red. Johnston's dragon illustration is rendered as spray artwork across the front of a fully fashioned knit, creating something that sits between streetwear and wearable art. The funnel neck and full zip closure give it a clean silhouette whether worn open or buttoned up.
The denim offering is equally strong. The Bull Selvedge Denim Jeans in Raw Indigo feature Johnston's bull artwork laser-etched into the raw selvedge, a detail that will develop character as the denim wears in. Cut wide through the leg with darts at the knee, these are jeans built for commitment. The Dragon Denim Shorts in Washed Black round out the bottoms.
Tees, Hoodies, and Headwear
Three graphic tees anchor the collection. The Dragon Tee in Washed Black, the Don't Be Scared Tee in Grape, and the Frog Logo Tee in Black each carry a different piece of Johnston's visual language. All three are cut from 230gsm cotton with screen-printed graphics.
For colder days, the Frog Logo Pullover Hood in Ash and the Enemy Pullover Hood in Distressed Washed Black are both built from 420gsm heavyweight brushed fleece. The distressed wash on the Enemy gives it a broken-in quality from day one.
Headwear covers all bases. The Enemy 5 Panel Cap, the Eye Trucker Cap, the Frog Reversible Beanie in Lime / Grey, and the Dragon Skully Beanie in Black.
Beyond the Wardrobe
The collaboration extends into homeware with two collectible pieces. The Frog Ceramic Incense Holder in Light Green takes the form of Johnston's iconic frog character, finished in a hand-applied glaze. The Jeremiah Bookend in Green brings Jeremiah the Frog to your bookshelf in solid metal. Both are the kind of pieces that start conversations.
