Description
Ray-Ban built the Aviator in 1937 to a US Army Air Corps brief for a lens pilots could trust against glare at altitude. Nearly ninety years on the Large Metal is still the same teardrop at full size, and arista gold with G-15 green is still the version most people picture.
The frame is a bright warm yellow gold through the wire rims, the double bridge and the temples. The nose pads are a soft rose-beige rather than the usual clear, which is a small thing but it warms the bridge against the gold. Temple tips are clear.
The lenses are G-15 green, the classic Ray-Ban tint. From the outside they read close to black, and looking through them colours stay neutral rather than going warm or washed out. This one is the 58mm.
