Rains makes some of the most recognisable bags around right now: clean, matte and quietly waterproof, built for a climate that looks a lot like Auckland's. Wally is an authorised Rains stockist, and bags are where the Danish label is at its strongest. Here is the range we carry, from the best-selling Hilo Weekend Bag to the everyday totes and backpacks.
The Rains story, in short
Rains was founded in Denmark in 2012 by Daniel Brix and Philip Lotko, two design graduates who decided to embrace the rain rather than hide from it. Their first product was a simple waterproof poncho, and the brand has since built a full accessories line around one idea: functional pieces with a clean, urban silhouette. Nearly every bag is cut from Rains' signature matte PU fabric, a smooth, lightweight, water-repellent coating that has become the brand's calling card.
The Hilo Weekend Bag: three sizes, one icon
If you buy one Rains bag, this is it. The Hilo Weekend Bag is Rains' take on the essential overnight bag, and it is comfortably our best-selling Rains bag since we opened. A coated full-length zip opens to a single spacious compartment, side-mounted compression straps cinch the load once you have packed, and webbing handles with a comfort grip carry it all. It comes in three sizes:
- Small ($150): cabin-friendly and gym-ready, sized for a long weekend without overpacking.
- Standard ($200): the do-everything size, and the one most people reach for.
- Large ($240): the most space, for a full week away or when one bag has to do.
All three come in a deep colour range. Black is the runaway favourite and tends to sell through first, followed by Green, Navy and Beige, with seasonal colours like Depth, Marsh and Lagoon rotating through.

Totes for every day
For daily carry, the Rains Tote Bag ($200) and Tote Bag Mini ($160) bring the same waterproof PU and minimalist finish to an open, grab-and-go shape. The Mini is the one to reach for with a laptop and a few essentials; the full-size Tote swallows a gym kit or a grocery run without losing the clean lines. Both wipe clean and shrug off a Takapuna downpour.
Backpacks, daily and technical
The Rains Backpack ($219.99) is the clean commuter staple: a squared silhouette, a magnet-snap flap and a padded internal sleeve that takes up to a 15-inch laptop, with a concealed phone pocket on the back panel. The Backpack Mini ($200) scales it down for shorter days and a 13-inch laptop. If you want something more technical, the Trail Rolltop Backpack ($249) and Trail MSN Bag ($229) step up to roll-top closures and a more outdoor-ready build.
The travel set: wash bags
The Hilo Wash Bag ($79) is designed to pair with the Weekend Bag, a waterproof toiletry bag with side buckles that compress it into your luggage. The compact Cosmetic Bag ($59) does the same for smaller essentials. Together with a Hilo Weekend Bag they make a tidy, matching travel set, which is exactly how a lot of our customers buy them.
Which Rains bag should you choose?
Rains bags are one size, so choosing is about matching capacity to use. For travel, the Hilo Weekend Bag Small handles a weekend, the Standard covers most trips, and the Large is for a week away. For every day, the Tote Bag Mini or Backpack Mini are the easy picks, stepping up to the full Tote or Backpack when you carry more. It is all built from the same waterproof PU, so whatever you choose will handle an Auckland forecast.
