Te Tōnga o te Rā Extrait de Parfum - 50ml

Te Tōnga o te Rā is the sunset, and the reference is Piha, black sand and heavy surf on Auckland's west coast with the light going down over it. The brand calls it the moment after the storm.

Bitter orange, cypress and pink peppercorn give it a dry, slightly bitter opening, which is the most interesting part. From there it softens into lily, tuberose and orchid, then settles on patchouli, vanilla and chestnut cream. The base is where it turns comfortable, sweet and a little edible without losing the earthiness underneath.

An evening scent, and the one to try if the midday florals are too much but you still want something rich. Composed as an extrait de parfum, the most concentrated format there is.

O Te Rā is a New Zealand fragrance and art house built by three friends who met playing rugby in the United Kingdom. Gregory Sebastien, born in Martinique and raised in Lyon, trained in Grasse and composes the fragrances. Maia Gibbs, a ta moko and contemporary artist from Tūranganui-a-Kiwa, shapes the visual language. James Penman, from West Tāmaki Makaurau, holds the story together. The range follows the sun through four phases, sunrise, midday, sunset and night, pairing French perfumery with te ao Māori.
