Gramicci makes one pant in several shapes, and the names do not make it obvious which is which. If you have ever stood in front of the rack wondering what actually separates the original from the Straight Fit, this is the answer, with the brand's own measurements.
What every Gramicci pant has in common
Before the differences, the things that do not change. Every pant below has the diamond crotch gusset that Mike Graham designed in 1982 so climbers could get a foot above their head. Every one has the integrated nylon webbing belt running through an elastic waistband, so you never need a separate belt and you can cinch it one-handed. Every one is cut in hard-wearing cotton twill that softens with wear rather than wearing out.
The belt is identical across the range. It is not a point of difference between the fits, whatever you might read elsewhere. What changes is the leg.
The four fits, narrowest to widest
All measurements are size M, taken flat across the garment. Double them for the full circumference.
| Pant | Leg opening | Inseam | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gramicci Pant | 21.0 cm | 82 cm | The 1982 original. Relaxed with a gentle taper. |
| Gadget Pant | 23.0 cm | 78 cm | Utility reissue with wrap-around pockets. Sits shortest. |
| Voyager Pant | 23.0 cm | 78.5 cm | Balloon shape. Roomiest through the knee, then comes back in. |
| Straight Fit | 24.0 cm | 79 cm | The original with the taper taken out. Widest hem. |
Gramicci Pant, the original
The one that started it all, and the benchmark the others are variations on. Introduced in 1982 and barely changed since. It runs relaxed through the thigh with a gentle taper to the narrowest hem in the range, and it is the longest of the four in the leg. Low rise, zip fly, two side seam pockets and two back welt pockets.
Pick it if you want the classic silhouette, or if you wear a lower-profile shoe and do not want fabric pooling over it.
Gadget Pant
Not a fit variation but a separate design, first drawn in the early 1990s as Gramicci's utility pant and brought back from the archive. It sits between a climbing pant and a painter's pant: large canvas pockets that wrap from the front around to the back, a D-ring and webbing loop for keys, and three seams down each leg.
Through the thigh and knee it measures the same as the original, then opens slightly at the hem, and it is the shortest of the four. Pick it if you want the carrying capacity of a cargo without looking like you are wearing cargos.
Voyager Pant
The outlier. A balloon silhouette with real room through the thigh and knee that then tapers back in, finishing slightly cropped. Big wrap-around pockets plus lower thigh pockets.
The hem measurement is mid-range, which undersells it. This is the roomiest of the four where it counts, through the leg. Pick it if you like volume but do not want a wide hem flapping around your ankle.
Gramicci Pant Straight Fit
The newest of the group, introduced in 2025. It takes the original and removes the taper, so the leg runs straight from the knee to the widest hem in the range, and it is cut a little roomier through the thigh. It also sits about 3 cm shorter than the original.
Pick it if the original feels narrow at the ankle, or if you are wearing it over a boot or a chunkier trainer. It is the easiest of the four to wear with a bigger shoe.
Sizing
Gramicci uses US sizing and runs true to size. The elasticated waist and cinch belt give a genuinely wide range of adjustment, so if you are between sizes either will work. As a guide, S is a 30 inch waist, M a 32, L a 34 and XL a 36.
These are relaxed fits by design. Size down only if you want a slimmer look than Gramicci intended, and bear in mind the Straight Fit already runs roomier through the thigh than the original.
How to wear them
The reason people end up owning several pairs is that they go with almost everything. A tee and sneakers is the obvious one. A button-down and a loafer takes them somewhere smarter. A hoodie and trail runners leans back into the outdoor roots they came from.
Black is the one that goes with everything. The pigment-dyed colours are the ones worth taking a risk on, because they arrive looking softly worn in and keep shifting with wear rather than fading flat.
